01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Even those who already enjoy matsukaze may be curious to try the Original, baked fresh in the workshop that day. Visitors have remarked on its softness and chewy texture, different from the matsukaze they usually eat, as well as its gentle sweetness. Matsukaze is described as a confection that began as provisions for the Honganji followers defending Ishiyama during a siege. At Mikito, you can start with a single piece of the Original (230 yen) and enjoy the texture that comes with a fresh bake.

For a change of flavour, try the Tamba black bean or walnut versions, each priced at 280 yen. The black bean variety pairs a crisp exterior with a chewy centre, while roasted walnuts bring a toasty note to the matsukaze. Choosing between the black bean and walnut versions is part of the fun. Visitors also find the small confections easy to pick up as a snack while out walking.

For a break inside, there is also matsukaze ice cream (530 yen), Mikito's original creation. Milk ice cream made with Jersey milk is drizzled with matsukaze syrup and topped with matsukaze and Tamba black beans. As well as taking matsukaze away, you can enjoy it in the café with coffee. On a walk through the area east of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, choose between the classic confection, the black bean and walnut varieties, or the ice cream. The matsukaze-based menu offers options to suit your tastes and the kind of break you have in mind.
